Creekside Support Service Ltd

Independent Living / Consumer Movement

The operation of Creekside Support Services is based on the Independent Living / Consumer Movement, which is a social movement by and for people with disabilities. The movement originated in the United States in the 1960s and made its way to Canada in the 1980s. The movement’s central principle is that people with disabilities who require personal support services should get a say in where, when, and by whom those services are provided.

All residents receiving care have equal ability to participate on the board or committee that manages their care. The managing bodies are directly responsible for hiring, training, evaluating and firing staff. They negotiate funding contracts, liaise with Home Care personnel, and ensure safe and adequate personal care is provided as required by residents.

Consumer Movement

All consumers have input into the type and level of service they receive. They cooperatively create their own schedules with a case manager and the Program Administration, providing hands-on training that enhances efficiency and fosters a higher skill level among care providers.
